Now I know that I have stated this a zillion times already so for the love, here I go again, I have always loved the street style and of course the beloved basics. I am a fan of boyfriend jeans and unapologetically they have become my uniform this fall. With these ONLY jeans I decided to give out my tips on how to style the boyfriend denim right.
This post all about my Look#1 ft. ONLY
The slouchy boyfriend jean is that elusive denim style we all want to try. When a pair of jeans looks so comfy, how could we not? The question is, how do we wear these jeans without looking like an actual boy or too careless? The answer is in the styling.
Styled right, this trend is the perfect combination of casual and chic.
Breaking down the key elements to help you rock your most comfy jeans, too.
The Right Fit.
The trickiest part of picking the right boyfriend denim is making sure that it flatters you. The goal is actually to look slightly tapered toward your ankles and loose but not baggy throughout. If that sounds horribly unflattering, stick with me for a minute! The key to picking boyfriend jeans for every body type is to find a pair that’s looser in the rear and thighs. This gives you space for that signature boyfriend looseness, and if you find a pair that tapers slightly at the bottom, you’ll get just the right fit.
A common mistake we might make when shopping for boyfriend jeans is not committing to the slouchy look and instead sizing down until the slouchy jeans are tighter. Only if your jeans look TOO big, find a different style. Remember, you do not want to fill out the boyfriend jeans. You will find that if you wear a smaller size, your hips and thighs will fill out the legs, causing you to lose the slouchy silhouette, and your legs will appear to be the same width from the hips down. So just say no!
For me, boyfriend jeans with rips is a bonus!! Either you'll see me wearing jeans with two slits each on the knee or a total distressed one, there is no in-between for me.
You might have noticed that boyfriend jeans almost always have a distressed light wash with some rips and frays. If you’re used to darker denim, this can be a departure. But light and distressed plays into the casual-chic vibe that boyfriend jeans are known for. The goal when wearing boyfriend jeans is to create contrast with your styling.
Cuff Them.
Most of the time boyfriend jeans come pre-cuffed, but if not, fold them above your ankles. To emphasise the laid-back vibe of the boyfriend jeans, make sure your cuff isn’t too perfect. Cuffing them also creates some curves on your legs by tapering in the loose fit and highlighting your ankles.
Perfect Shoes.
For me, sneakers work best with distressed denim. But again, it all goes with the styling. If I wear a crisp white shirt with my boyfriend denim, I would not pair it with sneakers and will go with pointed sleek pumps instead. Talking about this look, I'm wearing a loose fit t-shirt for a more laid-back and edgy look so I wore white sneakers that added up to the outfit. Ballet flats will add that hint of chic to your look.
The best way to dress UP your boyfriend denim is by adding some contrast with a pair of sleek heels. Dressy heels add an element of surprise, making everyone wonder how you managed to make classy heels and slouchy denim look so good together. If you want to really nail the sophisticated look, keep your heels to basic neutral colours.
Basic Top.
A plain basic sweater, t-shirt, or button-up emphasises the masculine vibe of your boyfriend jeans while also serving as the perfect canvas for your feminine accessories (only if you want to accessorise). Remember, this outfit is fashion-forward by nature. You don’t have to go overboard with your top and accessories. Opt for laid-back wardrobe staples. A neutral-coloured top will also turn the focus to your styling rather than any one specific piece of the outfit. For me, basics is the answer too all questions. I've paired this denim with a basic Olive green loose fit t-shirt, and tied a knot at the bottom to attenuate my waist, not because it was necessary but because it looks good and goes along with this outfit.
Structured Jacket.
Jackets and blazers are a must for adding structure to your slouchy boyfriend denim. Whether it’s a blazer, leather jacket, or trench coat, a structured silhouette will add to the play between professional and relaxed. Again, a neutral-coloured jacket will amp up the look and keep a cohesive colour scheme throughout your outfit. Here, I'm supporting an edgy look, so adding a solid-black leather jacket proved to be a great idea.
Accessories.
If you have been following me from the start, you'll know that I'm not very fond of accessories. I like to keep it minimal so I just add up a boyfriend watch in the name of accessories.
Ladylike handbags, jewellery-they all add a feminine contrast to boyfriend jeans. Don’t be afraid to go bold with prints and colours for the accessories. They will add an expressive flair to your basic colour palette. Bold jewelled statement necklaces or delicate long chain necklaces are both great options for adding the final feminine touches to your slouchy boyfriend denim outfit. A gold/silver watch, stacked rings, or a slim belt will complete the look.lbozzone.
I'll sign off with outfit details and I hope this post helps you with your boyfriend denim look. I'll see you all super soon! xoxo
